Chris Gayle credits Kieran Powell's century for West Indies win

Chris Gayle credits Kieran Powell's century for West Indies win

Explosive West Indies batsman Chris Gayle says he is impressed with the tactics employed by fellow opener Kieran Powell to achieve his maiden Test century.

Powell made 134 in the first innings of the just concluded Test between the West Indies and New Zealand in Antigua.

Gayle, who also scored a century and shared an opening stand of 254 with Powell, described his innings as patient and responsible.

"You have to give him a lot of credit. He was patient and he selected the right balls to hit," said Gayle, who returned to Test cricket after an 18-month break which came as a result of a dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

"There were times when he had a bit of difficulty scoring, but he was able to hang in there and helped to rotate the strike. I am very happy for him."

Powell's century as well as a knock of 30 in the second innings earned him a jump of 27 places on the ICC test rankings.

The Leeward Island cricketer now sits in 65th position, according to the new figures released Monday.

"I didn't have to give him (Powell) a lot of advice. I just told him to play his natural game and stick to the basics. He knows what he's about and he was able to handle the situations quite well," said Gayle.

"He's got a good head on his shoulders and I was happy to see him get his first Test hundred."

Gayle, playing his first Test since April 2011, re-entered the ICC Test rankings in 21st position following his knocks of 150 and 64 not out.

"I was motivated to do something special and as a team we were motivated to get the better of New Zealand," said Gayle who scored his 14th Test hundred.

"After coming off the good performances in the One-Day Series and the T20s, we wanted to make sure that we did not surrender the initiative."

The 32-year-old left-hander has become the first West Indies batsman to score 1,000 Test runs against the Black Caps.

"I am happy to be here playing Test cricket for the West Indies," said Gayle

Chris Gayle slams14th ton on Test comeback

Antigua: Playing his first Test match in one and a half years, Chris Gayle was back in form as he scored his 14th Test ton against the Kiwis on the third day of the first Test at North Sound, Antigua.

Gayle who was unbeaten on 85 at the end of the second day continued his brutal approach as New Zealand couldn’t hold onto the few chances that came their way.

Gayle moved into the nineties with a flat six off Vettori and then reached the three-figure mark with another six off Chris Martin.

The Jamaican reached to his century off 149 balls and was unbeaten at 146 as per the latest score. Powell at the other end was heading towards his maiden Test ton and was unbeaten on 96. Both of them have so far added 245 runs for the first wicket.

History is also up for grabs as Gayle and Powell now need only 54 runs to beat the West Indian opening partnership record of 298 set by the legendary pair of Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge way back in 1990.

The Kiwis who have been pathetic in the field so far once again failed to put up a good show. Just like the second day, both the set batsman offered chances off successive deliveries which the Kiwis couldn’t capitalize.
Graeme Smith to rejoin England tour

Graeme Smith to rejoin England tour

LONDON: South Africa captain Graeme Smith is to rejoin his teammates in time for the second Test against England after jetting home to attend the birth of his first child.

Smith returned to Cape Town last week after steering the Proteas to an innings victory against the hosts at the Oval, arriving just in time to see his wife Morgan give birth to a daughter, Cadence.

The 31-year-old, whose place as skipper was filled by AB de Villiers for a two-day game at Worcester, was due to return in time for the start of the second match of the three-Test series, which begins at Yorkshire's ground, Headingley, on Thursday.

JP Duminy said the whole side was delighted for Smith and added: "It's always good to have him back, the leader of our team. We're looking forward to having him here again."

South Africa's innings and 12-run victory against England was their first win at the Oval and came after an unbeaten first-innings triple century from Hashim Amla plus centuries from veteran all-rounder Jacques Kallis and Smith himself.
