England women beat West Indies in Twenty20 international

England celebrate victory
First women's Twenty20 international, Chester-le-Street:
England 72-2 (9.2 overs) beat West Indies 71-8 (20 overs) by eight wickets
Match scorecard
England's women cruised to an eight-wicket victory over West Indies in the first of five Twenty20 internationals.
Katherine Brunt took two wickets to help reduce West Indies to 7-3 and the visitors could only post 71-8 from their 20 overs at Chester-le-Street.
Captain Charlotte Edwards hit an unbeaten 27 and Laura Marsh 31 to help England secure their win in the 10th over and with 62 balls to spare.
The second match of the series takes place at Old Trafford on Monday.
Marsh was named player of the match, having also taken 1-11 from her four overs.
Her 31 runs came off 28 balls, helping to propel England to a score of 59 by the time she was stumped off the bowling of Anisha Mohammed in the seventh over.
The 25-year-old Sussex player said: "It was great to start the series off like that.
"We're really pleased with our performance today, the opening bowlers bowled brilliantly and the spinners backed them up. We followed up well with the bat to get the job done.
"We're all looking forward to carrying this momentum forward to Old Trafford."

Andrew Strauss' decline as Test batsman and captain: in numbers

The England captain has failed in recent years to match his heroics from the 2009 Ashes Series, when he finished the year with an average of 53.27.

A gradual decline in Strauss' batting is obvious when looking at the statistics.
His best year as captain undoubtedly came in 2009 when over the course of 24 innings Strauss racked up four centuries and four 50s at an average of 53.27, his highest figures since he first emerged in 2004 and finished with an average of 60.68 from 18 innings.
<noframes>Interactive chart: Strauss Test career by year</noframes>
That 2009 peak included the Ashes series win over Australia on home soil, for which Strauss was named English Player of the Series by Australia coach Tim Nielsen after scoring an aggregate of 474 runs.
The following year however saw his annual average drop to 34.57, with Strauss only making one century in the first Test against Australia in Brisbane despite reaching 50 on five occasions in 2010. He was also out for a duck three times.
2011 saw his decline in Test cricket continue after failing to make a 100, although England played half the matches they had the previous year, leaving his average for the year at 28.72.
Under pressure having not produced a century for over a year, Strauss then hit two in the Test Series against the West Indies in 2012 with scores of 122 and 141 in the 1st and 2nd Tests. His form though disappeared in the recent series against South Africa, top-scoring with 37 and opening the door for discussion on his future following the scandal with Kevin Pietersen ahead of the 3rd Test.

Despite failing to re-capture the heights of 2009, Strauss finishes his Test career with an average of 40.76 after 50 matches, which leaves him above the other two England captains to reach 50 Tests - Michael Atherton (54 matches, Ave. 40.58) and Michael Vaughan (51 matches, Ave. 36.02).

NEW DELHI: After his maiden Test hundred against New Zealand in Hyderabad, Cheteshwar Pujara was overwhelmed by the congratulatory text messages he received from Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

"I have grown up seeing their batting and when you score a hundred and get messages from these stalwarts, it really means a lot," Pujara told TOI.

"Players of their calibre will always be missed in the dressing room. During my debut series, I had the opportunity to see the way these two seniors used to prepare before a Test. They never missed a training session and for a newcomer like me, that was big motivation. Even today, we have Sachin Tendulkar. He is someone we all look to learn from every day," he said. Pujara also got advice from South African AB de Villiers, who was busy playing the Test series against England in England and still found the time to text him after his hundred. Pujara also had a special mention for captain MS Dhoni.

"I took some tips from AB during the IPL and before travelling to the West Indies for the 'A' tour series. He has been very helpful. Also, during the Hyderabad Test when I scored my hundred, Dhoni came up and told me not to get complacent. He reminded me that I can go on to score a double hundred because I have done it in domestic cricket on many occasions. It was quite encouraging to hear those words from the captain," he admitted.

A 2-0 Test series win against a not-so brilliant New Zealand team may not have seemed very difficult for the Indians, but Pujara believes nothing comes for free at the highest level. "You still have to play well to beat an international side. Their bowling wasn't bad at all. They bowled in the right areas. It will be a different challenge against England and Australia. I will have to make use of the opportunity given to me by the selectors," Pujara said.

Kallis sees South Africa to T20 win over England

CHESTER-LE-STREET (England): Jacques Kallis guided South Africa to a seven-wicket win over World Twenty20 champions England in the first Twenty20 international at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.
The Proteas were in trouble at 29 for three, chasing a seemingly modest 119 for victory.

But opener Kallis, returning to international duty after being rested from the drawn one-day series between the two countries, made 48 not out of 44 balls with seven fours.

Together with left-hander
JP Duminy (47 not out) he shared an unbroken stand of 90 in 91 deliveries as the Proteas, who won with an over to spare, went 1-0 up in a three-match series ahead of this month's World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.

South Africa saw hard-hitting opener Richard Levi caught in the slips off
Jade Dernbach and Twenty20 international debutant Faf du Plessis lbw to fast bowler Steven Finn.
De Villiers, who helped
Hashim Amla add 172 in South Africa's seven-wicket win in the fifth one-day international at Trent Bridge on Wednesday which squared that series at 2-2, was then caught behind by Craig Kieswetter, a former Proteas junior international, off South Africa-born seamer Dernbach for 10.
South Africa were now 29 for three and England, all but out of the contest at the mid-innings break, were now very in the game.

But if South Africa could produce one decent partnership bat they would win and in world class all-rounder Kallis and left-hander Duminy they had the men for the job in the absence of the rested Amla.

England Twenty20 captain
Stuart Broad, like Kallis rested from the one-dayers, brought back Finn in a bid to break the stand but to no avail.
Ultimately England's 118 for seven -- their third lowest total in this format -- did not give their bowlers enough of a score to defend.

Spin bowling, long regarded as the the Proteas' Achilles heel, accounted for four England wickets with off-break bowler
Johan Botha (two for 19) and left-armer Robin Peterson (two for 27), strking after de Villiers won the toss.
Meanwhile ever reliable fast bowler
Dale Steyn took one for 13 in his maximum four overs.
At 85 for seven, England were in danger of posting their worst Twenty20 total before an unbroken stand of 33 in 27 balls between Broad and
Graeme Swann, who both finished on 18 not out, gave them a foothold in the match.
No England batsman made more than opener Kieswetter's 25.

England's collapse started with a needless run out.

Alex Hales
, who made an England Twenty20 best 99 against the West Indies in June after replacing the still exiled Kevin Pietersen, charged down the pitch for a non-existent single and, turning back, was run out by Kallis's direct hit on the stumps.
Kieswetter then fell when he was plumb lbw to Botha's first ball.

And
Ravi Bopara, who averaged just 5.50 with the bat during the one-dayers fell cheaply in familiar fashion when he edged a good length Steyn delivery to Botha at slip.
Botha then struck again when he bowled dangerman
Eoin Morgan for 10, after the former Ireland left-hander bottom edged a pull-sweep.
Peterson bowled
Jos Buttler before fellow young gun Jonathan Bairstow holed out off paceman Albie Morkel.
Then a well-judged catch by Kallis saw Peterson dismiss Patel. The series continues in
Manchester on Monday

England will field the outstanding player of the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka when it begins later this month. No, that does not herald a shock comeback by Kevin Pietersen, who was the man of the tournament when England were crowned world champions in the Caribbean in 2010. It is the 23-year-old wicketkeeper batsman from Sussex, Sarah Taylor, who is ready to command centre stage, according to her captain Charlotte Edwards, as England's women aim to make up for the bitter disappointment they suffered in the West Indies two years ago.
"I believe she's the best player in the world – this is the stage for her to go out and show everyone," Edwards said, with a slightly sheepish and surprised Taylor sitting next to her.
"That's not pressure I'm putting on – that's what we expect of her."
"I haven't heard it before actually," Taylor responded. "Thanks. I still look at Charlotte as the best batsman in the world. And I still stand at the non-striker's end as a kid just watching her bat. So for her to say that is fantastic."
It may also be seen as slightly provocative, ahead of a five-match series against a West Indies team who include a highly-rated Miss S Taylor of their own — Stafanie Taylor, a hard-hitting 21-year-old all-rounder from Jamaica. Taylor has already broken new ground for the women's game by earning inclusion on the long-list of nine contenders for the world cricketer of the year award, alongside the likes of Hashim Amla, Saeed Ajmal, Kumar Sangakkara and Alastair Cook.
She played her part, at the age of 19, in the shock two-run defeat that West Indies inflicted on England in St Kitts at the last t20 World Cup, knocking out the holders and favourites before the semi-final stage.
"It did hurt," Sarah Taylor said. "For me personally going to Sri Lanka is very important, almost to put right what we did then and prove that it was just a glitch. I can't really put my finger on what went wrong."
"There were a few things," said Edwards, England's long-term and widely-admired leader. "If you slightly underestimate West Indies in their home conditions, they have their home crowd there, and we just didn't react quick enough.
"It was probably one of the most disappointing games of my career. My first 10 years weren't terribly successful but when you're expected to win a tournament and you go out before the semi-finals, of course it still hurts.
"But I think we've moved on since then. We've played brilliant Twenty20 cricket over the last 18 months and we want to put right what happened in the West Indies and prove to people that it was just a blip.
"It's been a motivator for me for the last two years, absolutely. That's been probably the catalyst for us turning our Twenty20 cricket around and being more aggressive and more selfless and knowing our roles. We've been preparing for this for 18 months."
Putting things right for England has involved a 15-match t20 winning run, which continued with consecutive victories over Pakistan in Loughborough last week – Edwards agreeing that the quiet improvement being made by Pakistan, which has even involved central contracts for some of their leading players, represents potentially significant progress both for world women's cricket, and for women in Pakistan.
But now things become much more serious for England, with the five matches against West Indies, whose formidable firepower also includes Deandra Dottin, a Bajan cousin of Ottis Gibson, the men's coach. The first two games, at Durham on Saturday and Old Trafford on Monday, will be played before England's men's team face South Africa in their t20 World Cup preparations.
"They're huge games for us as a team," said Edwards. "It's definitely something that floats our boat."
The presence of the two Taylors should also make these pre-World Cup contests well worth an early start.

The colours of the logo, with strong reds and oranges, are seen in both nature and Sri Lankan culture and arts, with their presence in the logo giving them a cricket "spin". It has a natural sense of movement due to its fluid lines and forward angles.

Mr Lorgat said: "I am delighted to reveal this colourful logo that reflects the culture of Sri Lanka. The event now has a formal identity and we will use it to promote this exciting and entertaining event."

The logo will be used on an ongoing basis over the next 12 months and will feature on publicity and promotional material during the build-up to and throughout what will be the fourth ICC World Twenty20.
